Our History

1947-48: Winter, Jim Rathbun, for business at 43 State St, the site of the former Manten Porter mill.

1948-67: Rathbun Company sells building materials, builds several homes in Presque Isle. In 1952, company incorporates, creating two separate entities, Rathbun Construction and Rathbun Lumber. Rathbun Construction evolves, eventually expanding into churches, schools, and other large projects.

1966: Jim Rathbun dies unexpectedly. Companies continue to operate with employed leadership.

1967-80: Alden Rathbun, just out of college, begins working with construction company. Company expands and builds water treatment plants throughout the state.

1981: Construction operations are phased out. Alden assumes leadership of Rathbun Lumber. With more attention to buying right, the company begins to grow. Sales soon top $1 million annually.

1993: Computer technology modernizes sales and accounting procedures.

1995: Company joins Lumbermen's Merchandising Corporation, largest independent buying group in USA. With added buying power, sales continue to surge.

1996: Computer assisted design software enables expansion of home and kitchen design sales.

2011: Major interior make-over improves sales and showroom spaces.

2012: Rathbun Lumber celebrates 65th anniversary.

2014: Warehouse addition improves stock and storage capacity, and added customer convenience.

2015: With steady growth in sales, and a very capable and dedicated staff, Rathbun Lumber has remained true to its roots at 43 State St. Presque Isle, maintaining the time-honored traditions of customer and community service.

2016: Rathbun Lumber was purchased by Jamie McLaughlin. Wearing a lot of different hats throughout his 10 years at Rathbun Lumber, Jamie decided to purchase the 68 year old family owned business. With support from his family, staff, and loyal customer base he knows Rathbun Lumber can continue to serve Aroostook County as we always have done.
